Hand Writing

Hand writing is considered an academic skill and in our outpatient setting insurance companies do not reimburse for “school related” activities, we are unable to set goals specifically for handwriting. However, we are able to assess other areas which may be the root of handwriting difficulties.

How then can a child get OT help for handwriting outside of the school setting?

An OT evaluation may be recommended to assess other areas which may be the root of handwriting difficulties: strength, fine motor coordination, visual perception, and visual motor skills. If any of these areas have are found to be impaired, then OT services may be recommended to address these areas, specifically.

We also offer a self pay handwriting class that consists of one session per week for 6 weeks at the cost of $240.00. We will follow a program called “Handwriting Without Tears®”.

Handwriting Without Tears®

This program was designed by Occupational Therapists to improve fine motor, visual perception, and eye-hand coordination skills which impact a child's handwriting abilities. It is a simple, proven successful, user-friendly resource which will improve your child's letter formation, speed, neatness and legibility in handwriting skills. This program uses a consistent, easy to follow, multi-sensory approach and is very successful with the 2-lined method to teach proper letter formation. It is an easy and fun way to learn the skills that often frustrate our children, parents, and teachers. The program is also designed to use with left-handed children and includes easy steps for pre-writing skills, learning printing and cursive handwriting for children of all ages and developmental levels.
