Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation
Program
The Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation Program at Braintree
Rehabilitation Hospital is a dedicated program for the treatment and management of patients with
Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Patients appropriate for inpatient treatment have usually experienced significant functional decline and may be admitted to this program following:
- An acute multiple sclerosis exacerbation-including a course of steroids if prescribed.
- Treatment for an unrelated medical/surgical problem.
- Functional decline despite intensive home or outpatient services.
- After intrathecal baclofen pump placement to maximize function.*
Rehabilitation provides some of the tools patients need to take control of their MS rather than having MS take control of them.
Restorative Rehabilitation aims to restore lost function. This usually involves strengthening and retraining
muscles as well as adapting to decreased function with new techniques. Restorative rehabilitation is especially useful immediately after recovery from an exacerbation or acute attack of MS symptoms. Our
program offers a seamless transition from acute hospitalization through inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation to home.
Everyone with MS, whether their symptoms are mild or severe, can benefit from rehabilitation! Recently
published scientific studies have demonstrated sustained functional benefit for persons with MS who
participated in supervised rehabilitation programs.
