Voice Problems That Respond To Therapy
Hyperfunction
This is the most common type of voice disorder we evaluate and treat. The etiology is usually abuse and misuse vocal patterns, frequently leaving patients with edema, nodules or polyps. This often affects individuals who speak for a living such as teachers, trial lawyers, sales and marketing professionals, lecturers and day care providers.
Aging
Patients generally present with a weak gravelly voice. The cause is often related to insufficient vocal fold closure resulting from generalized laryngeal weakness and deconditioning. The aging voice is typically responsive to voice therapy.
Weakness
Neurological events, acute or degenerative can produce vocal cord paralysis or general laryngeal weakness. Symptoms can include: hoarseness, strain, breathiness, altered pitch, poor projection ability or vocal fatigue. Voice therapy ensures that patients make maximal use of their vocal potential.
Pre-operative and/or Post-operative Dysphonia
These patients have had to compensate for excessive vocal cord tissue or weakness that interferes with the natural coordination of laryngeal musculature during phonation. Pre-operative and/or post-operative voice therapy is frequently recommended to break compensatory vocal patterns, thereby enhancing surgical results.
Speech Enhancement ServicesSpeech Enhancement is available for professionals who want to modify a foreign accent, eliminate a regional dialect or improve fluency or speech precision. Please note: This service is not generally covered by insurance and is not available at all locations.
