Direct Admission Program

Often patients with various complicated illnesses/injuries need emergency services, but do not require acute hospital admission. These same patients may make "repeat" visits to the emergency department and are risky to be sent home, but still do not need to be hospitalized in an acute hospital.

Braintree Rehabilitation hospital may be the solution for these patients. Braintree Rehab is licensed as an Inpatient Rehab Facility (IRF). Basically, we are a hospital with a specialty in rehabilitation services. Because of our license, we can admit patients directly from home or the emergency department and still have Medicare pay for the rehab stay, unlike skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) who require three (3) day stay in the acute hospital before Medicare will cover the cost of the SNF stay.

Examples of patient situations that may need intensive, inpatient rehab services (and that would meet Medicare IRF admission criteria) are:

  • Degenerative/progressive neurological disease, i.e., multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease or other motor neuron type disease
  • Fractures with consequent loss of independent function not requiring surgery
  • General debilitation secondary to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or other systematic disease causing limited mobility and deficits in self-care.

The Direct Admission Program provides patients with rapid access to a rehabilitation program that can assist them with maximizing their independence and return to the community. Patients admitted via the Direct Admission Program will be assigned, based on their diagnosis, to the appropriate rehabilitation program and treatment team to maximize their outcome.
