Swallowing (Dysphagia) Disorders Program
Types of patients we are experienced in treating:
Services are available to the adult outpatient population, specifically those with neurological disorders, including those with a CVA, TBI, MS, Parkinson's disease, and dementia. We also provide dysphagia treatment for patients with pulmonary problems, laryngeal oncology and reflux resulting from gastrointestinal disorders.
Diagnosis
The client begins with a clinical evaluation of swallowing to assess for signs/symptoms of dysphagia and/or aspiration. Based on these results, treatment or further testing will be recommended. Additional testing may be recommended such as a Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) / Videofluoroscopy or "Swallowing X-ray." Many of your local acute care hospitals provide this service.
Treatment
Based on test results, treatment may include:
- Compensatory strategies for swallowing
- Oral motor/laryngeal exercises
- Diet modification
- Adaptation of feeding environment
- Referral for consultation with other disciplines (OT, ENT, GI etc.) as indicated
Education
Recommendations and ongoing education are provided to clients, family/caregivers, nursing staff and physicians by the clinicians of the Dysphagia Team. It is our belief that education is a critical component in the client's successful transition from the clinical setting to the most independent life possible.
